Noise Pollution Is Making Us Sick, and Climate Change Is Making It Worse

Most people think of noise as an inconvenience, something to tune out on a commute or sleep through with earplugs. But for the hundreds of millions of people living in dense, low-income urban neighborhoods near highways, industrial zones, and flight paths, noise is not a minor irritation. In fact, noise pollution is a chronic health exposure, and a warming climate is making it harder to escape.
What Noise Pollution Actually Does to the Human Body
When a sound is unwanted or excessive and it disrupts daily life, that is noise pollution. Noise can come from everything, from traffic and construction to the ever-present hum of cooling machines for data centers, for example. It is something near inescapable today, especially in urban areas.
Noise pollution is one of the most underestimated threats to public health on the planet, and the evidence behind that claim is growing harder to ignore. The European Environment Agency marks noise as the second largest environmental health risk in Europe, after air quality. This claim is consistent with the World Health Organisation’s guidance. A 2026 joint statement from the European Society of Cardiology, the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, and the World Heart Federation formally classifies noise as an environmental cardiac hazard, placing it alongside air pollution, heat, and chemical exposure as a driver of the global cardiovascular disease burden.
Take traffic noise pollution, for example. Research shows that chronic exposure to traffic noise is associated with cardiovascular disease, sleep disturbance, impaired cognitive performance, and metabolic disorders. Noise does this through biological pathways, including oxidative stress, inflammation, and disruption of the autonomic nervous system. In the worst of cases, it can even lead to death. According to the EEA’s 2025 report, long-term exposure to transport noise in Europe contributes to 66,000 premature deaths. It also contributes to 50,000 new cardiovascular cases and 22,000 new cases of type 2 diabetes every year.
Who Bears the Loudest Burden
Noise pollution does not occur equally everywhere. In cities across the world, lower-income neighborhoods cluster near highways, industrial zones, flight paths, and construction sites. This pattern is not by accident, but a legacy of urban planning decisions that consistently prioritized wealth over welfare.
In London, for instance, research found that lower socioeconomic and ethnic minority groups face systematically higher exposure to transport-related noise. Meanwhile, informal settlements in South Africa reach 60 decibels of average noise levels during the day, well above safe thresholds, with road traffic and household density the primary drivers. In Accra, Ghana, rapidly growing urban traffic and noise from informal businesses and religious activities are reportedly creating an emerging health crisis.
Children’s exposure to noise also deserves particular attention. Schools near highways and flight paths show measurable impacts on reading development and cognitive performance. In this light, noise pollution is a silent educational equity crisis hiding in plain sight.
Another factor that contributes to noise pollution is occupation. Those who work in construction or factories with heavy machinery, for example, are at higher risk of hearing loss from the constant noise pollution. Occupational noise-induced hearing loss concentrates in lower-income and rapidly industrializing countries where noise control regulations are weakest and workers have the least power to demand change. Studies note countries across East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Eastern sub-Saharan Africa carry the greatest global burden.
Where Climate Change Enters the Picture
The climate connection is both direct and underreported. As temperatures rise, more people open windows at night to cope with heat. This simple action increases their exposure to outdoor noise at precisely the hours the body most needs quiet to rest and recover. Urban heat islands, which concentrate in the same low-income, low-canopy neighborhoods already overburdened by noise, compound this exposure.
At the same time, climate adaptation infrastructure itself, such as generators, pumping stations, construction of sea walls and drainage systems, adds new noise sources to communities already on the edge of safe thresholds. And as extreme heat events increase, the cardiovascular stress of heat and noise exacerbate each other through the same biological pathways, amplifying the risk beyond what either stressor would produce alone.
A Quieter Life
More often than not, people simply get used to things that bother them, especially if they are invisible. Noise is invisible, which makes it easy to ignore. However, the impacts are real—on the human body, on biodiversity, and on the environment.
As the urban population grows, tackling noise pollution becomes both increasingly vital and increasingly difficult. Sure, individual solutions like earplugs and noise-insulated windows exist, but they are far from enough. Addressing noise pollution involves addressing its sources and mitigating its effects. An example of effect mitigation is urban green spaces such as tree canopies, parks, and green walls. They act as natural sound buffers while simultaneously reducing urban heat, making them one of the most efficient dual investments a city can make.
For a holistic improvement of urban health, implementing effective regulations is key. Sound monitoring would help collect relevant information to support noise supervision, such as from traffic. Then, noise mapping gives planners the data to target the most exposed communities first. From this, governments can develop robust, data-based regulations that improve quality of life for all.
